extracurricular activities in tallinn

How can your child make a friend, spend spare time and do something they really like? The first place where you should start is international schools, most of them offer several classes. Those classes are suitable for expat kids and even if there are language barrier issues, teachers are able to handle it. Also there are nine municipal Centres for extra-curricular activities in Tallinn and a wide selection of private schools and centers what give children the opportunity to develop skills in areas of interest, such as art, handicrafts, music, dance, technology, sports, nature and languages.

For young people, choosing a suitable hobby can be a good beginning for choosing a career. But as expats you have to be ready for language issues as the main language is Estonian and sometimes there classes held in Russian too, but not so many in English. The teachers’ qualifications and ability to work with expat kids may vary, but you can always contact certain schools or centers and ask them which classes they would suggest. Of course, for the child it may be hard to attend a class where he or she may stay isolated and does not fit in. To prevent that from happening, one options is perhaps to find another family whose child or children would like to do similar things and can attend the class together. An example with one youngster was with one boy who wanted to go to Judo class. The nearest one happened to be the one where most of the children spoke only Russian. He visited the classes a couple of times and then quit, with the language barrier being one of the main reasons.

The bottom line here is that support your child and encourage him or her if he or she really wants to do something! There may be problems with the language barrier, but Estonia, and especially Tallinn, are becoming more and more multilingual and the language barriers should come up less and less.
